Upper Montgomery Composite Squadron Celebrates Promotions

August 10, 2023

The Upper Montgomery Composite Squadron, Maryland Wing, encourages all cadets to “Rise as Leaders.” On the second Thursday of August 2023, the squadron celebrated the accomplishments of several cadets who followed through on that guidance through support, perseverance, and achievement.

Two cadets were presented the Wright Brothers Award by Major Stephen Weinhold, Commander, Upper Montgomery Composite Squadron, Maryland Wing: Cadet Staff Sergeant Agastya Haswar, award #57,502, and Cadet Staff Sergeant Sidharth Nair, award #55,836. The award launched in 2003 during the centennial of Orville and Wilbur Wright’s historic first flight. This accomplishment marks the completion of Phase I of the CAP Cadet Program, known as the learning phase. Once this award is earned the cadet is promoted from cadet airmen first class to cadet staff sergeant and begins service as a cadet non-commissioned officer.

Cadet Second Lieutenant Luke Moitoza received the General Billy Mitchell Award #75,105. The award was presented by a special guest, Colonel Edwin Moitoza, USAF, Retired, Luke’s grandfather. The award honors a fearless pilot whose patriotism, foresight, and tenacity surpassed the ridicule he faced. Billy Mitchell, known as the “Father of the Independent Air Force,” serves as the role model for cadet officers reminding them to recognize that speaking truth to power is a moral duty. The Mitchell Award marks completion of Phase II of the CAP Cadet Program that recognizes sustained excellence in all four areas of cadet life: leadership, aerospace, fitness, and character. Once this award is earned the cadet is promoted from cadet chief master sergeant to cadet second lieutenant and begins service as an officer.

During the same ceremony cadet promotions were celebrated by Major Stephen Weinhold, Commander, Upper Montgomery Composite Squadron, Maryland Wing. The cadets promoted were C/TSgt Haswar, C/TSgt Nair (both had received the Wright Brothers award earlier that evening,) and C/SMSgt Alade.

In addition to the milestone awards and the cadet promotions the squadron also took time to recognize cadets that had graduated high school and were heading off to college. C/CMSgt Arth Kataria, C/CMSgt Adore Alade, and C/SrA Jules Nakpil were recognized and encouraged by all present. The celebrations and recognitions served as visible reminders to the cadets, senior members, family members, and guests that leaders rise with the support and encouragement of many.
